I firmly believe that serious music study is fundamentally about cultivating personal refinement; studying music professionally does not mean one must pursue a musical career. The significance of music education goes far beyond skill acquisition or career choice: it touches the deep development of human emotion, patterns of thinking, and creativity.
The Essence of Music Education: Non-Quantifiable Skills AI Finds Hard to Replicate
In the AI era, many repetitive and quantifiable knowledge and skills are being rapidly replaced by machines. However, human-exclusive non-quantifiable abilities become the most valuable assets for future society. Music study is a fertile ground for cultivating these abilities. It requires learners to develop:
- Logical thinking and precise calculation: Understanding music theory, harmony, and form requires rigorous logical analysis; controlling rhythm, pitch, and dynamics in performance is also an embodiment of precise calculation.
- Discipline and perseverance: From monotonous technical exercises to mastering complex movements, sustained discipline and tenacity are essential.
- Concentration and active listening: The intense focus during performance and the keen attention to musical details cultivate concentration and deep listening skills.
- Creativity and emotional expression: Music is a language of emotion; interpreting a work requires integrating personal understanding and feeling, stimulating unique creativity.
- Problem solving and self-reliance: Faced with technical challenges, learners must think independently and try different practice approaches, thereby developing problem-solving abilities.
These capabilities are currently difficult for AI to imitate or surpass. They are not only foundations for academic success but also key qualities that enable individuals to stand out in any industry in the future.
The Polarization of Parental Educational Views in the AI Era
Confronted with the impact of AI, parents in Hong Kong are showing two sharply contrasting educational orientations:
Extreme One: The Traditional Competitive Model — "Relentless Drilling to Compete with AI"
These parents are anxious about AI's arrival and choose a more aggressive path by doubling down on traditional academic competition. They believe only through "relentless drilling" of homework and exams and by securing places at top institutions can their children gain advantage in future society. They try to build an apparently solid "elite" route for their children by continuously improving quantifiable academic results, hoping to "beat" AI in future competition. Behind this model lies Hong Kong's long-standing overemphasis on academic achievement and deep-rooted fear of an uncertain future.
Extreme Two: The Innovation-Complement Model — "Accept AI, Cultivate Non-Quantifiable Skills"
Other parents demonstrate a more open and forward-looking perspective. They accept the reality of AI and understand its limitations. They recognise AI's strength in processing big data and executing repetitive tasks, but also its shortcomings in areas like emotion, creativity, and critical thinking. Therefore, they shift educational focus to cultivating their children's non-quantifiable abilities that AI struggles to replace. Through music, arts, and other interest classes, they concentrate on training logic, discipline, perseverance, concentration, and creativity. They believe these are the fundamentals that will allow their children to thrive and express uniquely human value in the AI age.
There is no absolute right or wrong between these two educational philosophies. Each family’s background, values, and outlook on the future will determine different educational choices. However, within this polarization, we may all be overlooking a more fundamental and dangerous social problem.
The Overlooked Deep Social Issue: Skill Attrition under Hong Kong's "Win" Culture
Our generation has been instilled from a young age with a deep-rooted "win" culture. From competition for prestigious kindergartens to primary and secondary school ranking, to university degree contests, and then the expectation to become a "professional" and ultimately "buy a home and settle down," this socially defined "path to success" has become almost the sole standard. Under this single-minded value system, any learning that appears unrelated to academic results—such as music, arts, or sports—can be seen as "not serious" or even labelled as "distracting from study."
The consequence of this mindset is an excessive emphasis on quantifiable academic achievements while selectively undervaluing or sacrificing those seemingly "useless" non-quantifiable abilities—critical thinking, emotional intelligence, interpersonal communication, and innovative spirit. Ironically, these are precisely the human traits most scarce and precious in the AI era. When we abandon cultivating these abilities in pursuit of scores, we are not only weakening children’s holistic development but also depriving them of the opportunity to truly shine in future society.
The Real Fear: Academic Delay or Skill Attrition?
Now we must face a sharp and urgent question: should we fear that children studying too much music will "fall behind" academically, or should we be more afraid that AI will strip our children of their invaluable non-quantifiable personal abilities?
AI is developing faster than we imagine, rapidly replacing many repetitive, quantifiable jobs. If we remain entrenched in traditional academic competition—chasing scores and rankings while neglecting the cultivation of inner qualities and non-quantifiable abilities—then what we truly lose is our children’s indispensable competitiveness and adaptability in the future. This loss is far more profound and damaging than temporary academic fluctuations.
Which is more terrifying? The answer is obvious. AI’s arrival will be faster than we expect; it is not only a technological shift but a final test of human values and educational philosophy. Are we truly ready? This is not only a test for parents and educators but a profound reflection on society’s educational ideals.
