The core of the ATCL piano performance diploma is a full solo recital:

Important note: Trinity performance diplomas are graded only as Pass or Distinction; there is no Merit.

Prerequisites

12-Month Preparation Timetable

Months 1–3: Technical Consolidation

Before selecting repertoire, students need a solid technical foundation:

• Scales and arpeggios: all keys, arpeggios, and contrary motion scales, at a speed of 120–144 BPM
• Finger independence: technical studies such as Hanon and Czerny
• Pedal technique: correct use of sustain pedal, half-pedaling, and sostenuto pedal
• Tone control: able to produce at least three distinct tonal colours (bright, warm, delicate)

Months 4–6: Repertoire Selection and Initial Learning

Repertoire selection is one of the most important decisions in ATCL preparation.

Repertoire selection principles:

1. Include at least one Baroque or Classical-period work
2. Include at least one Romantic or modern work
3. Ensure clear tempo contrasts between pieces
4. Keep total performance time around 33–36 minutes

Months 7–9: Deep Interpretation Phase

• Research the works' background
• Analyse structure
• Develop a personal interpretation
• Listen to multiple versions

Months 10–11: Stage Preparation Phase

• Mock performances weekly
• Perform for an audience
• Academy recitals
